Generating the Roots of Climate Justice (ROOTS)

Reimagining climate learning through ecofeminist approaches to address the interconnected root causes of gender-based violence and environmental degradation.

- our proven solutions

The Challenge

Climate change is not only an environmental crisis; it is a health and wellbeing crisis, and it plays out in deeply gendered ways. Climate-related shocks create conditions that increase gender-based violence, child marriage, and psychological harm for women and girls. Yet most climate change education stops at literacy and possibly pro-environmental behavior change, failing to address the deeper psychological and structural roots—patriarchy, human exceptionalism, a culture of uncare—that drive both environmental degradation and gender inequality in the first place.

Our Response

Through our ROOTS portfolio, we pursue ecofeminist approaches to climate change education and climate change research that center health, wellbeing, and feminist planetary consciousness as foundations for transformative climate action. Working through participatory approaches, we explore the psychological roots of pro-environmental and pro-equality behavior with the conviction that achieving climate justice requires transforming not just what people know, but the collective paradigms shaping how we relate to each other and to the living world.
