Seeding Climate Action for Systems Change through Girls' Education (SEED)

Leveraging best practices in girls' education to catalyze climate action and climate justice in low- and middle-income countries.

The Challenge

Girls and women in low- and middle-income countries bear the heaviest burden of climate change—yet most education systems still fail to equip them with the knowledge, green skills, and agency to respond to it. Compounding this, girls' education remains largely invisible to climate funders: the field has lacked the measurement tools and evidence base to demonstrate that gender-transformative education is a high-return climate investment.

Our Response

Through our SEED solutions, we work alongside partners to develop gender-transformative climate change education approaches that center girls' lived realities, green and blue skills, and climate agency while simultaneously pioneering the methodologies needed to measure and model education's contribution to climate outcomes. Together, this practice- and evidence-focused approach is designed to unlock new financing streams and to make the case to funders and decision-makers alike that girls' education is a climate strategy.

Through the SEED Alliance—a cooperative of seven organizations with deep expertise in education, climate change, and gender—we are piloting a transformative package of climate education interventions for out-of-school adolescent girls in Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Alongside a gender-transformative curriculum toolkit, the initiative will develop and test innovative methodologies to quantify the climate impact of quality girls' education, generating the evidence and certified carbon credits needed to attract climate finance to the education sector at scale.
